Movie Evaluation: Voyage Into Space – The Surprising Japanese Masterpiece
If you love to watch classic action movies that have deep moral and ethical significance, then look no further than the Japanese classic, “Voyage Into Space.” This classic has, of course, been around for a long time, and is still loved by millions of people around the world. And for good reason. This science fiction classic has everything you could want in a movie. Perhaps one of the greatest reasons for its lasting success is its combination of a simple story with cutting edge technology.
Our allegory begins with a top secret government association creating a massive automaton that will shield the earth against any and all strange invaders. The android is constructed to be controlled by a blameless looking timepiece that doubles as an advanced communiqu device. The only stipulation is that the first creature who communicates to the enormous robot by means of the wristwatch communication tool will be the one who it will ceaselessly be submissive too.
And the creature who speaks first to the oversize robot is of course a juvenile, blameless boy. He is only playing when he first picks up the wristwatch, unconsciously of course, and speaks to the android. But imagine his astonishment when the android obeys his every order, and submissively protects the boy from all manner of destruction that comes his way during this ambitious piece of film making.
At first, it would seem that the boy has uncovered a devoted acquaintance, skilled of shooting missiles from his fingertips, and picking the boy up and taking him on sudden trips around the globe. But this, of course, can’t last very long as the world is shortly invaded by upsetting transformed aliens from the far reaches of space. This is when the real test of their acquaintance is determined. Will the boy and his new found automaton buddy risk all to protect the earth? Will they even be triumphant?
At first it seems as if the android will be victorious and shelter the world from the invading monsters, but all is not well. The invading monster is made from a exceedingly volatile substance, and if he is shot, the whole globe will be destroyed. So shooting the alien dead is not an alternative for our authoritative robot hero. He must respond to the international threat with radical measures indeed.
And in a unhappy story of self sacrifice, the robot grabs the monster, and carries him deep into the depths of space, where he will pose no risk to the simple populace of the planet. This, of course, leaves the boy without his friend, but he learns a constructive message. Sometimes you must go to extreme sacrifices to save your associates, even to the point of sacrificing your own life. If you would like to watch a gripping film with a extreme moral message, look no further than “Voyage Into Space.
