Green energy has been an idea in the works for a while, but it has been gaining momentum in recent years. This is not the only reason to consider sunlight-capturing panels, but it can be a good one. The benefits of solar panel installation are multiple, and should be considered if you are at all interested in the idea.

Panels capture energy from sunlight and store it in a battery as electricity. This energy is then run from the panels into your home, and powers your appliances, electronics, and other things such as electric water heaters or air conditioners. Because the energy is stored, you have access to it during the night as well as during the day when it is being generated.

Burning coal, gasoline, and natural gas can cause global climate change, but using sunlight does not. People can sell their excess electricity generated by the panels back to the local electric company, in some cases. This is often referred to as ‘running the meter backwards’, and can help offset the cost of the panels even more. Or, if you use more energy during one season and need a boost from the electric company, you can sell back some excess in another season and come out even for the year.

Living off the grid in modern comfort is now possible, thanks to panels. Homes that are far away from the local electrical grid can still have all the modern conveniences including stoves, ovens, hot water, heaters, and lights thanks to panels. Although it is possible in many cases to hook up a house like this to the grid, the miles of wiring required can be prohibitively expensive, and panels might be cheaper.

Use your personal situation to evaluate whether the benefits of solar panel installation are greater than the costs. This will be different for each person. However, if you can afford to use them, the potential impact of green energy on the current climate change is potentially very important. And the more people that join in, the greater the effect.
